Hugh was the youngest son of Mr William Henry and Mrs Elizabeth Greenhalgh of Spring Hill, Dawley.

He had had a good education and had left the Oundle School in 1906 to start work in a local bank. Hugh had enlisted a month after the war started in September 1914 and gained his commission 12 months later. He was serving in France by the summer of 1916.

A Memorial service was held at Doseley church for Hugh shortly after the news of his death had been received.

Hugh was killed instantly whilst leading his platoon into action on the 5th May 1917 and his body is buried at the Fins New British Cemetery at Sorel-le-Grand in grave VIII.K.3

Extra Notes: Hugh was born on October 7, 1889 and Baptised on the 10 Nov 1889 at St Luke’s church Doseley, in 1901 he was at the Ovingdean Hall School in the village of Ovingdean, near Brighton, East Sussex.
